Ambitious proposals for Barrow will be discussed with top government ministers.

Barrow and Furness MP Simon Fell has revealed that Team Barrow will be meeting with Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove to speak about the next phase of supporting the town, Dreadnought and SSN-AUKUS submarine programmes.

Mr Fell said: “It was good to sit down with Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove to discuss the work that his department is leading on with #TeamBarrow.

“The vote of faith that the Government has put in Barrow with its commitment to Dreadnought and SSN-AUKUS, and the decades of work that this will bring, has allowed me to make the case for sustained investment in Furness – to enable timely delivery of these nationally important programmes, but also to uplift the community that is delivering them.

“This week we have the next Team Barrow meeting in Whitehall with the Cabinet Secretary.

“We will discuss the next phase of this programme, investing in our transport infrastructure, new housing, local NHS services, and rightly supporting the community which delivers the National Endeavour that keeps our nation secure 24/7.”

Team Barrow is a collection of senior civil servants and local community leaders with the aim of ensuring Barrow benefits from the major defence projects taking place in the town.

In 2023 it was announced that the AUKUS submarines would be built by BAE Systems as part of a £3.95 billion contract.

BAE Systems submarines managing director Steve Timms previously spoke of the opportunity presented by the AUKUS submarine deal.

He said: “The recent AUKUS announcement, along with the Government’s ongoing commitment to the UK submarine programme, presents the town with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform and regenerate the area.

“Recruiting new people and providing high-quality, skilled jobs in an attractive place to live and work is a vital component of this, as is the need to retain our current employees.”
