An acclaimed travel writer is set to host a talk at a Lake District bookshop.
Tom Chesshyre – who has authored 11 travel books that have seen him travel by cargo ship around the Maldives and meet tornado-chasers in America – will be giving a talk on his newest book at Verey Books in Pooley Bridge.
In his latest book, Lost in the Lakes: Notes from a 379-Mile Walk Around the Lake District, Tom travels to Penrith by train and sets forth on a giant loop around the national park using the sixteen principal lakes and waters as the focus.
The book aims to give readers a new way to trip around the Lakes that suits casual ramblers while taking in key places such as Keswick, Cockermouth, Coniston, Bowness, Ambleside and Grasmere.
Along the route he also learns about issues regarding second home and holiday homes causing young locals to move out, the effect of climate change, the damage to staffing levels caused by Brexit, and pollution from blue-green algae in some lakes.
It’s also a love letter to the Lakes and highlights stays in bothies, shepherd’s huts and old climbing hotels.
Bookshop owner Al Verey said: “I love Tom’s book, particularly page 37 which is all about me! I hadn’t realised when I first met Tom back in 2022 that he was essentially undercover and collecting data for the carnival of characters that appear in Lost in the Lakes.
“It’s a wonderful book, very inspiring, full of eccentric locals (ahem!), and a real love letter to the Lakes. We are thrilled to welcome Tom back for our bumper Words on Wednesday season in February.”
Taking place on Wednesday February 28 the event will start at 7pm and is part of the bookshops Words on Wednesday events – which invite in poets and authors to give talks on their work.
Tickets cost £10 and include a welcome drink and can be purchased on the bookshop’s website.
