Cockermouth may have struggled at first team level this season – but their Colts are raising spirits at the club.
For the second week in a row they were team of the week at Strawberry How after toppling League leaders Darlington 7-5.
That had followed an impressive 52-5 win at West Hartlepool which was continuing a sequence of winning performances.
Cockermouth’s North Division trialist Finn Reed scored Cockermouth’s try against the table-toppers and Ethan Black put over the conversion.
Afterwards club president Steve Stainton said: ““What a game, those lads were brilliant and with only 15 in the squad some of them played through some tough times.”
A week earlier the Colts had travelled to West Hartlepool looking to continue their recent run of wins – and they did so impressively.
Again it hadn’t been ideal for them, having only 17 available players and losing their scrum half and goal kicker to illness the night before the game.
However, as they’ve done all season, they just put that aside and got on with the job in hand.
A strong start from the Wasps had the home side on the back foot from the off. Some damaging carries from the forwards laid the platform for the backs who were clinical when the chances came.
Cockermouth were soon in full control and, although goal kicking was proving an issue, they built a commanding lead.
Some ill-discipline crept in towards the back end of the half which led to a string of penalties to the home side, and the Wasps lost two players to the sin bin.
The pressure eventually told and the home side crossed in the corner right on the stroke of half-time.
Cockermouth soon took back control after the break and the points started to flow. West Hartlepool struggled to cope with the speed physicality and wasps finished strongly.
A special mention went to Under-16’s player Alfie Wright who put up his hand to play in an unfamiliar position at scrum half.
He came up with an outstanding all-round performance, taking the player of the match and grabbing himself a try in the process.
