In the closing years of their Football League life Workington Reds had to sell to survive.
It was the price they had to pay for small attendances compared to the rest of the Fourth Division.
One of the players they sold for a life-saving £30,000 was Dave Irving – a local lad who moved to Everton under manager Harry Catterick in 1973.
He later played for Sheffield United, Oldham and Shamrock Rovers before moving to the USA and for the last 40 years has played, coached and managed teams in the States.
Dave, along with brother Jimmy was back at Borough Park on Saturday to watch his old club beat Matlock Town 2-1.
Cumbria Crack’s John Walsh, who reported on the Irving transfer over 50 years ago was pleased to catch up with the former player and you can hear their conversation here…..
