Lake District hotel on market for £2 million

Scafell Hotel

A Lake District hotel is on the market for £2 million.

The Scafell Hotel, at Rosthwaite, is being marketed by real estate advisors Colliers at a lower price of offers in excess of £2 million.

Julian Troup, head of UK hotels agency at Colliers, is handling the sale of the former 18th century coaching inn.

He said it may attract interest from buyers looking to convert it to self-catering accommodation, which is also a thriving business opportunity in the local area.

Acquired by the current owners in 1971, they are looking to sell the property in order to retire.

Julian said: “Scafell Hotel is a very well-known Lakeland venue ideally located in the midst of the lakes, and in the beautiful village of Rosthwaite.

“While the business needs some modernisation it could easily reposition with solid trade, or it could also be adapted and used as a self-catering accommodation which is another viable business model for the area.

The property is sizeable which offers scope to be adapted for longer term letting purposes as well.”

Originally built as a private residence for the artist Mary Barker, the property sits in around five acres of grounds and includes a 60-cover restaurant, lounges, and self-contained Riverside Bar with seating for 50. There is also parking on site.

Scafell Hotel is close to the Lakeland fells including Great Gable, Dale Head, High Spy, Scafell Pike and Great End.

There is also scope for the establishment of four glamping pods within the paddock and the property also includes a self-contained one-bedroom owner or manager’s flat on the first floor, with a lounge, dining room, and ensuite bathroom, as well as three staff bedrooms with a shared communal bathroom.
