Qzone edge closer to holding on to title

With only four games left of the Carlisle Snooker League season, the Division One league leaders Qzone edged closer to holding onto their title with a 5-0 whitewash at the ROAB Club.

They are now nine points ahead of their club rivals Inter Qzone who beat Ex Servicemens Club C 4-1;

Qzone have only lost 18 frames out of 70 played and the other teams in the league are finding that form, just a little too hot to handle.

The Division Two leaders are still SECC C and they have a 13 point advantage on their nearest challengers and they look set for a return to Division One after an absence of a few years, following their 4-1 win against club rivals SECC D.

It is much more uncertain when it comes to the second promotion place, as only four points separate five teams (Qzone Originals, SECC, St Margaret Mary’s SC, SECC D and Conservative Club). A couple of big wins from any of these teams could be enough for them to get that sought after second place.

So far this season, there has been some high-quality snooker played and some high breaks as well. There have been nine breaks over 50 and the current leaders are Mike Nixon (85) in the 1st Division and Mark Taylor (38) in the 2nd Division.

This week’s match report features DH Qzone against SECC A when the first frame was between the two team captains – Tony Desborough for the home team against Phil Wall.

This was a high scoring frame for both players before Tony won the frame at 63-38.

Nigel Lewthwaite beat Martin Goodhead in the second frame, 58-30 to extend their lead to 2-0. He was able to restrict Martin’s chances at the table and take the opportunities that were left him.

High Break leader – Mike Nixon

Frame three was a low-scoring affair between Scott Davidson and Alan Trotter. Lots of safety play meant it became increasingly difficult for either player to make a substantial break. The frame went to a black ball finish, which Scott sank for the home team.

Mick Miller got the first point of the night on the board for SECC A when he beat Gary Cosway. The early stages of this frame were all about safety and not giving too much away. Once again, it went down to the colours and it was Mick who came out on top, winning 56-36.

The final frame of the night saw a great performance from Richie Lambert for Qzone against Keith Graham. When Rich finds his potting boots, he can be hard to stop. So it proved as he won 64-31.

This gave DH Qzone a much needed 4-1 victory which saw them move away from the relegation zone.

We also kept tabs on Qzone Originals against RAOB B when the first frame was between Matt Lowrie for the home team against Alan Jardine. Matt was on top form and won the match 65-18, which included a break of 29.

Chris Errington was up next for Qzone against Jamie Blakely. Chris hasn’t played many games this season and he paid the price as Jamie potted the last few colours to win the frame 49-33.

Dan Sanderson beat Peter Dean 53-20 in the third frame to give Qzone the lead 2-1 on the night  after producing a fine display of potting and tight safety game. Peter was unable to put any run of balls together in a frustrating night.

Peter Lowrie extended the home team’s advantage further in the penultimate frame when he beat ROAB captain Chris Bray 50-29. Once he had potted the last couple of reds, he always had enough points in the bag to clinch the frame once it got down to the colours.

In the final frame of the night, Qzone captain, Gordon Berry was able to secure a 4-1 victory for his team when he beat Brian Makepeace in similar fashion to the last frame. Gordon played well and once he sunk the minor colours, he had enough to win 54-29.

Other Results: DIV 1: Annan Blue Bell 2 Longtown 3; Inter Qzone 4 Ex C 1; RAOB A 0, Qzone 5; The Rock A 1, The Rock 4.

DIV 2: Conservative Club 3 Eastriggs 2; SECC 3 St Margaret Mary`s 2; SECC C 4, SECC D 1.
