Windscale ended their poor run of form last night with a 10-0 victory over the Wearside League’s basement club Willington at the Falcon Complex.
The defeat condemned Willington to relegation into Division One, however, they did not go down without a fight.
The Willington team had a mix of young players possessing good levels of skill who, with the addition of a couple of more experienced members, will have a good chance of returning to the Premier Division next season.
The Atoms were on the score-sheet in the 14th minute with a goal from veteran Ray Sempill. Picking the ball up on the edge of the penalty area, Sempill unleashed a powerful shot into the top corner.
It was Sempill again five minutes later when he doubled his, and the Atoms account. A ball floated to the back post was headed back across goal by Lewis Selkirk with Sempill having the easiest of chances to convert.
Regular scorer Lewis Jolly etched his name on the scoresheet with a gift from the Willington keeper to give the hosts a 3-0 lead at the break.
Jolly was put through one on one with the keeper who after saving his initial shot, inexplicably gave the ball back to Jolly who after rounding the custodian planted the ball into the back of the net.
The game was effectively over in the 54th minute. Following some great work by Jolly, a beautifully weighted ball from Reece Fretwell was nodded home by Rhys Singleton.
With the Willington spirt almost broken at this stage, it was not surprising that the goal tally mounted in the last half hour of the game. Jolly added a further three goals to take his contribution to four.
Singleton with his second, Jordan Bowness and Harry Hodgson completed the scoring.
The Atoms have two further successive home games. They host Wolviston this Saturday and Richmond Town the following week. Richmond will be looking to avenge their Alan Hood Cup Final defeat by the Atoms on Good Friday. Both games kick off at 2.30pm.
