On a weather-ravaged day three teams were still able to eke out victories in the Cumbrian League’s Premier Division.
Champions Carlisle, Cockermouth and Workington all forced wins as the other three fixtures were abandoned.
Cleator v Keswick; Furness v Dalton and Millom v Whitehaven were all abandoned without a ball being bowled. It’s especially disappointing for Millom as that’s the second game they have lost to the weather.
Their game at Haverigg was called-off on the opening day, but their South Cumbrian rivals were able to play at Workington yesterday.
It was rain affected and pretty tight but Workington got the verdict by nine runs in the end.
Put into bat Workington reached 132-7 off 32.4 overs and then, with a revised target of 121 to win from 26 overs, the visitors had reached 111-5 at the close.
In the end Workington owed much to, an unbroken eighth wicket stand of 38 between Ryan Clubley (17no) and Martyn Turner (23no) to get them into a winning position under the conditions.
Fourth team captain Turner had been called-up because of a couple of bowlers who were absent, and at the end he put in two overs for 11 to cap a good return to first team action.
Earlier opener Jake Daniel (20) and Tom Fox (25) had put on 48 for the first wicket.
New pro Akshay Chandran took 3-25 on his Haverigg debut with good support from Jordan Postlethwaite (2-14).
Chandran (34) and Postlethwaite (27) were also prominent with the bat for Haverigg who just couldn’t find enough support. Simon Beare (3-19) was the most successful Workington bowler.
Champions Carlisle scored their first win, following last week’s defeat by Keswick, when they were successful at Wigton by 64 runs.
The game was turned their way by a sixth wicket stand of 114 between Alex Raybould (71no) and new wicket-keeper Matty Brown (62) after they had lost half the side for 77.
Marc Brown (32) and skipper Michael Slack (30) had been prominent earlier for Carlisle.
They eventully finished on 198-6 after their innings was reduced to 44 overs, with Chris Hodgson (2-45) and John Reed (2-52), both from nine overs, the most successful Wigton bowlers.
Chris Hodgson (31) and Kieran Little (20) were the leading Wigton batsmen, but they were also aided by 30 extras which included 16 wides.
They were eventually bowled out for 134 in 38.3 overs with Chris Blythe (3-26) the most successful Carlisle bowler.
The third completed game was at Sandair where Cockermouth earned their second win against Egremont with the home side successful by eight wickets.
Egremont were put in to bat and were bowled-out for 89 in 35 overs with Gabriel Drimmie (4-17) the most successful bowler.
New overseas amateur Raghav Kupar (24) and skipper Coady Scott (22) were the only two Egremont batsmen into double figures.
Opener Alex Grainger (53no) anchored the winning Cockermouth reply of 93-2 in 21.5 overs.
