The community has pulled out all the stops after a fundraiser to help speedway side Workington Comets has hit its target.

The Northside track was broken into in the early hours of Wednesday and thousands of pounds-worth of equipment was stolen from a storage shed.

The Official Workington Comets Supporters Club set up a Gofundme page to try and help the club raise funds to replace the stolen equipment.

It set a £2,000 target and as of noon today, Friday May 31, has now raised £2,095.

James Wilson, chairman of the supporters club, said: “I was devastated to here the news that there had been a break-in at the track. My first thought was how can we help raise money to source replacements for the equipment, and I know just how supportive and excellent our fans are that a Gofundme page would be a great way to do this.

“In just over 24 hours, we have raised over £2,000. It’s mind-blowing to see the huge support and backing the Workington Comets are getting only 18 months into our return.

“I’d just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated so far and in the coming days, without your support this would be a huge cost to the promotion and this will go a long way to helping recover from this setback.”

Police are investigating and Workington Comets are aiming to get back on track for their home meeting against Plymouth on June 15.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
