The annual Bello Memorial darts competition had its biggest ever turnout this year.
Held at Wigton Bowling club the popular tournament attracted 60 entries.
The organiser Duggie James was pleased with the number and on a busy day was grateful for the help he received from George Moore and Graham Metcalf.
Scott Stirzaker supplied the oches, and the draw was organised by Debs Sowerby, Carole Mounsey and Janice Wilson.
The competition is played “double life” and only cost £7 to enter, and with food available from Sheila Harrison, it made for an enjoyable day – lasting about eight hours.
The players were from Scotland, Penrith, West Cumbria and Northumbria, while the winner came from Morecambe. It was especially good to see a lot of women competitors, Duggie said.
There were some amazing darts thrown throughout the day with numerous 180s and high checkouts.
The first half semi-finals were: Callum Goffin who beat Paul Irving and Mark Sloan who beat Chris Bingham. In the final Goffin beat Sloan.
The second half semi final were: Paul McGimpsey, who beat Ronnie Kirk, (last year’s winner) and Callum Goffin who beat Mike Sowerby. In the final Goffin beat McGimpsey.
So with Goffin winning both sides of the draw, he was the outright winner.
In actual fact Goffin is a PDC player, who won a Tour Card through Q-School in January 2023.
The Bello Memorial competition was introduced about 14 years ago after the untimely death of Mike Bell who was a popular darts player in the local leagues.
