The charming market town of Ulverston was transformed into a vibrant hub of nostalgia as it hosted the much-anticipated Retro Rendezvous 2024, writes Vince Brand.
Known for its picturesque, cobbled streets and historic buildings, Ulverston, the birthplace of Stan Laurel and home to the world’s only Laurel and Hardy Museum, provided a perfect backdrop for this annual festival.
The event, a celebration of all things retro, featured an array of attractions, including live music, vintage cars, motorcycles, scooters, cycling events, and retro market stalls.
The heart of the festival was based in the centre of Ulverston, offering a full weekend of fabulous retro fun that captivated locals and attracted Retro enthusiasts from far afield.
Today’s festivities kicked off at noon with the rousing tunes of St Andrew’s Pipe Band, setting the stage for a day filled with diverse musical performances.
The line-up over the weekend included Mountain Ash, Alcove, The Cascara, AKA Skafell, DJ Shamus, Kev Kendal, Olivia Dacre, Wolftown Rendezvous, Black Sheep, Spiratones and PV-7.
Additional cycling-related talks took place at the Laurel & Hardy Museum with Chris Sidwells and Simon Warren.
The festival also featured the famous Velo Retro old school cycling events, which took participants through the stunning landscapes of the Lake District.
For the 2024 Edition X, three routes were offered, designed to cater to all abilities: The Saunter, The Loafeur, and Le Grand Fromage.
These routes ranged from 24 to 99 kilometres, ensuring there was something for everyone.
For one weekend, steel vintage bikes reigned supreme, and retro cycling jerseys were the epitome of cool.
In addition to the music, vintage cars, classic bikes and cycling, visitors enjoyed a variety of food, drink, and market stalls selling retro clothes and memorabilia, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere in the heart of the town.
Mark your calendars for next year—it is worth the effort!
