New young people’s space set to open in Kendal

A new space for young people in Kendal is set to open next month.

The Helm will be available for youngsters to socialise, work together, and support each other in maintaining positive mental wellbeing.

It has been created by Wave Forward, a mental health and wellbeing charity for young people and its headquarters will be the No-Hands Rest Coffee House in K-Village.

The Helm is designed with young people at its core to foster inclusivity and prioritise positive mental health in schools and across the local community.

Wave Forward said: “The Helm is a place where the members call the shots. From devising exciting projects to simply having a place to relax, The Helm is a place run by and for young people, all under the supervision of Wave Forward’s experienced youth workers.”

It will officially open on Saturday July 13 from 4pm until 5.30pm with a pizza party.

People can sign up to say they will attend via waveforward.org.uk/thehelm, or email ben.g@waveforward.org.uk

The Helm has been built following the success of Wave Forward’s Wellbeing Ambassador Programme, a school initiative dedicated to promoting positive mental health. Wellbeing Ambassadors from local schools are already helping with the setup of The Helm.

Wave Forward said one in five teenagers face mental health issues such as anxiety or depression and the statistic was one of the driving forces behind The Helm.

Through ongoing training and support, the young people of The Helm will be empowered to take charge and steer the direction of the new hub, it added.

Participation in The Helm will equip young people with valuable skills in mental health advocacy and support, benefiting their future careers and personal development.
