There was exciting racing for all age groups in the penultimate week of Carlisle Cycling Association’s evening race series last night.
The night began with an enthusiastic field of Under-8 and Under-10-year-olds who all rode commendably.
Winners of the Under-8’s were Mieke Van Schelven and Oliver Nichol and the victorious under 10’s were Mitch Stewart and Zoe Martin.
A special mention must be made of Under-8 girls Isla Faichen and Skye Stewart who took a tumble fairly early on in their race but who both showed a lot of bravery and got back on their bikes to complete the race.
In the older youth races Scottish brothers Cobey and Josh Stewart both won their age groups and Cockermouth’s Sophie Smith-Jackson was on the top step of the Under-16 girls’ podium.
The field in the adult race for Category 2,3 and 4 riders was a little smaller than it has been in recent weeks but there was no decrease in quality.
With only light winds the racing was brisk, with riders averaging well over 40 km per hour throughout the 50 minute race.
Dearham’s Jude Davison, returning to form after illness, put in a strong performance making multiple attacks and looked like he was heading for the podium until a fast finishing group swept past in the last lap.
Moonglu Race Team’s Jack Rees narrowly beat Wolf Cycles’ Adam Bent into second and Newcastle’s Daniel Saba rounded out the podium.
It was a good night for the locals with six Cumbrians in the top 10.
Border City Wheelers’ Ryan Johnston who only started racing this season had another strong ride, finishing in 6th position just over a second behind the winner and is definitely a rider to watch in future seasons.
Next week is the last event of the series and along with races for all age groups the Association will be presenting the end of series awards.
