£10,000 appeal to save part of Egremont Crab Fair

A £10,000 appeal has been launched to save a part of Egremont Crab Fair.

Established in 1267, it is one of the oldest fairs in the world, but organisers fear they may have to pull the plug on the free Friday night event Dancing in the Street after funding has dried up.

The fair is due to be held from September 20 to September 22.

Steve Foster, president and treasurer of Egremont Crab Fair committee, said: “For many years we have opened the weekend of the fair in September with the free music event on Egremont Main Street, Dancing in the Street.

“This has previously been funded entirely from grants, sponsorships and donations, however since Covid these sources of funding have almost completely dried up.

“We simply cannot continue putting on this highly popular event unless new sources of funding can be found.

“The more money we can raise the better we can make the event, so please donate to this worthy cause.”

He said costs for the 2023 Dancing in the Street event totalled £9,833, including £3,830 for the stage and PA system and £4,090 for performers.

If the committee cannot raise the entire £10,000, it said donations will be used to fund other Egremont Crab Fair events.
