Jordan Palmer grabbed his first goal for Kendal Town last night to earn the Mintcakes their first win in the Northern League.
The former Carlisle City sharp-shooter struck six minutes from the end to drive home the only goal of a hard-fought game with Guisborough Town.
The two teams have to do it all over again on Saturday when they meet at Parkside Road in the FA Cup.
Manager Jimmy Marshall said: “I thought we were two well matched sides for an hour with nothing in it but we were the better side in the last half an hour and deserved to win it.
“It was a great relief to get off the mark and funnily enough I’d spoken to Jordan the day before and told him I fancied that he would score the winner.
“We had made four changes from Saturday and Jordan was one of those coming in. I thought they all did well which underlined what a good squad we have. It was good to see the togetherness in the dressing room after the win.”
Kendal had responded well after Saturday’s chastening introduction to the Northern League when they lost 4-0 at Redcar Athletic.
Last night Redcar followed-up with another 4-0 home win, this time against West Auckland to as the best of four teams who have won both their opening games.
Kendal are 14th in the early League table, last of 10 teams who have three points so far.
