Kendal Town salvaged their extra preliminary round FA Cup tie at Parkside Road with an equaliser from the penalty spot in stoppage time.
Actually it wasn’t from the spot itself as Guisborough keeper Robert Dean saved James Bailey’s initial effort but the Kendal striker was left with a tap in from the rebound.
It made the score 2-2 and the two sides – who had met on Tuesday night – are scheduled for a third confrontation on Wednesday night.
The penalty was awarded in the 90th minute when substitute Tom Russell was bursting into the box. There was no doubt that he had been fouled but the question was if it had appened inside or outside the box.
Video evidence later confirmed the referee’s decision was correct and by the time Bailey took the penalty the game was in the 91st minute and added time was being ticked off.
In the end a draw was probably a fair result, which had followed a narrow 1-0 win for Kendal in mid-week – so not a lot between the two sides.
Although Guisborough had started the best it was Kendal who took the lead on eight minutes when clever footwork and control in the box by Ryan Winder released Matt Dudley who banged in the opening goal.
But Guisborough were level on 20 minutes when Joey Smith thumped one in from 20 yards to round off a good spell for the visitors.
There was a blow on 23 minutes when close-season recruit Nial Cowperthwaite was forced to retire through injury and he was replaced by Brandon Croskell-Robinson.
Tuesday’s match winner Jordan Palmer had an opportunity but shot straight at Dean and on 40 minutes the visitors had a goal disallowed for offside. The half ended all square which was a fair reflection.
Croskell-Robinson had the first chance of the second-half on 57 minutes when he was slipped through, but his effort was well blocked by Dean’s legs.
It was Guisborough who got in front on 67 minutes when a header back by Bailey Kenny, aimed for keeper Chris Cheetham but Kurtis Howes nipped in to grab possession and fires past the home keeper.
Russell was among three Kendal changes on 76 minutes and it was his late burst into the box which produced the equalising penalty.
