Kells were the only West Cumbrian side to play on Saturday in the National League.
Premier Division side Wath Brow had been told on Friday that their game at Heworth was off because the pitch was too hard and declared unsafe.
Egremont Rangers, however, travelled for their Division One game at Wigan St Patrick’s only for the referee to call it off half an hour before kick-off.
Danny Barker, the Egremont coach said: “The warm-up was set up and the players were changed when a couple of the lads raised concerns about the state of the pitch.
“It was like concrete and to say it had a couple of potholes is an understatement. They were craters, and deep too.
“I spoke to the referee and he did a pitch inspection, taking and sending pictures to the RFL about the standard of the pitch before calling it off due to concerns on player safety.”
In West Cumbria Kells took on Stanningley and had to fight back after going 12-0 behind midway through the first half to win 20-12.
Nathan Stone and Logan Temple had gone over for tries, both converted by Zack Clayton as the visitors made a bright start.
Kells did hit back before the break with a try by Lewis Smith which was converted by Ross Gainford.
Four minutes into the second half Kells were level when Ryan Starkie crossed for a second try and again Gainford converted.
The home side edged ahead with an unconverted try from Ellis McKee on 52 minutes and eight minutes later Stanningley had Connor Aveyard sent off for alleged dissent.
The 12 men battled well but Kells clinched the win four minutes time with an unconverted try by Aaron Burns.
