A man has appeared in court accused of causing the death of a fellow driver who died 10 days after a Carlisle crash.
Neil Errington, 50, was driving a Mercedes A45 which was involved in a collision on the A7 at Stanwix Bank, close to the city’s cricket club, at around 4pm on Monday, May 2 2022. Police said the collision involved several vehicles.
In a tribute released through Cumbria police after his death, Mr Errington’s family said: “Neil was a lovely man who would help anyone he could, old or young.”
Police arrested a man following the collision.
David Devoy, 54, has appeared in front of a district judge at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court. He faces a number of charges.
One alleges that he caused the death of Mr Errington by driving a BMW 3 series dangerously on the A7 at Stanwix Bank on May 2 2022.
Devoy is further alleged to have caused Mr Errington’s death by driving a vehicle at a time when he was disqualified from holding or obtaining a licence.
A further charge alleges that Devoy drove dangerously on May 2 2022.
He also faces two charges of fraud which allege that he made false representations. On April 7 2022, it is alleged that Devoy informed the DVLA that he had lost his driving licence, and applied for a replacement, intending to make a gain for himself.
And three days later, on April 10, it is alleged that he made a second false representation — to Glen Rental Limited by failing to disclose a relevant medical condition.
No pleas were entered by Devoy when he appeared in court.
The case was committed by the judge to Carlisle Crown Court. Devoy, of Ford Lodge, South Hylton, Sunderland, is due to appear there in front of a judge for a plea and trial preparation hearing on September 2.
In the meantime he has been granted unconditional bail.
