Workington Comets completed a quick double over Berwick Bandits to consolidate fourth place in the Championship table.
After Saturday night’s win at Shielfield, the Comets were strong favourites to win on their own Northside track and they duly obliged by 52-38.
That aggregate point was another useful addition to their total and with just one meeting to complete they are seven points clear of Glasgow who have four matches in hand.
But once again the Comets were hampered by an injury, and although Saturday night’s victim Antti Vuolas was back to ride again, it was Claus Vissing this time who had to be withdrawn.
The Dane had crashed heavily in heat six and although he was able to walk away he was withdrawn from the rest of the meeting.
By that stage the Comets had opened-up a ten point lead but the Bandits were able to fashion a 5-1 and two 4-2s in the remaining nine heats as well as sharing the spoils in two others.
Workington’s three heat leaders all scored heavily to fire the Comets home – led by guest Erik Riss (13 + 1), Troy Batchelor (12 + 1) and Vuolas (12).
They each had three heat wins and it was especially pleasing to see the Finn back in business after his fall and subsequent withdrawal the night before.
There was also an important win in the reserves race for Sam McGurk who has been short of points for a while but he get out of the gate well and laed all the way to the flag.
Fellow reserve Paul Starke showed his worth again with six and two bonus from his five rides while second guest Simon Lambert earned 5 + 2.
The Bandits, again relying on rider replacement for Rory Schlein, depended heavily on Lewis Kerr (13 + 1) and Drew Kemp (12 + 1).
But the top two Bandits were second best in the final race when they were outgunned by Batchelor and Riss.
Batchelor got away and then the German international went round both the Bandits from the back to get into second place and it was all over.
