It wasn’t always easy but Barrow eventually got the job done at Dewsbury when they won 31-24.
The bottom side, with only one Championship win to their name, caused some problems and at half-time only trailed 14-12.
In fact it was Dewsbury who scored first after only four minutes when Perry Whiteley, the former Workington centre, was able to use his strength to get through a Barrow defender and score from short range. Calum Turner converted.
Barrow were level on 15 minutes when Brad Walker was tackled just short of the line but he was still able to stretch out and get the touchdown. Ryan Shaw converted.
Aaron Smith was held-up just short and when they were awarded a penalty Barrow opted for the shot at goal which was successfully completed by Shaw.
Dewsbury opted for a similar decision when they were awarded a penalty on 34 minutes and Turner levelled the scores.
Dewsbury went in front on 36 minutes when Barrow made a mess of clearing their lines and Whiteley was able to collect his second try.
Right on half-time Barrow grabbed the lead. The Raiders moved the ball around swiftly and when Josh Wood charged over the line then ball came free and Shane Toal was able to dot down. Shaw’s conversion put Barrow ahead at the break.
The Raiders added to their lead on 53 minutes when they again opted to take a kick at goal and Shaw made no mistake.
They increased their advantage on 55 minutes when they had numbers on the left and it was Shaw who finished with a flying dive into the corner. His touchline conversion was almost as spectacular.
That sparked a strong spell of Rams pressure and after repeated sets on the Raiders line fullback Bailey O’Connor found enough space out wide to get the ball down. Turner converted.
On 65 minutes Dewsbury got their noses in front with a converted try. A missed tackle allowed O’Connor to get in for his second try and Turner converted for 24-22.
But Barrow hit back on 73 minutes with another penalty from Shaw.
It was all on the last seven minutes and it was Barrow who finished best.
On 75 minutes Brad Walker edged them ahead with a drop goal and in the last minute Wood broke from a scrum and went 20 yards to dive over under the posts for Shaw to add the extras.
