Plans to make Silloth’s public toilets accessible on a pay-for-use basis are moving forward.
Silloth-on-Solway Town Council is currently looking for a contractor to put pay-for-use entry systems in place in all four of the town’s public toilets.
It would see the town’s toilets on Silloth Green on Criffel Street, its Edwardian toilets on Criffel Street and those on Sea View car park and on Skinburness Road become accessible with a fee.
Wendy Jameson, town council clerk, said: “The town council has been discussing the possibility of adding a pay-to-use entry system on the public conveniences for a number of years.
“There are four lots of public conveniences in Silloth which are the responsibility of the town council and are funded through the precept.
“To reduce the burden on Silloth ratepayers and to bring in some revenue to cover the running costs, the town council is looking into the possibility of a pay-to-use entry system, like many other places throughout the country.
“The local community were consulted on the proposal when the town plan was being put together and we are currently seeking quotations for the cost of the necessary equipment.”
The town council is aiming for the new pay-to-use systems to be accessible to all visitors, including those with disabilities and for it to allow contactless card and mobile payments to be made.
While the date of installation for the new systems is dependent on funding and the costs of installing it – the council are hoping to see the new entry systems in place at the start of next summer.
