Train lines between Barrow and Lancaster have now reopened.
It was believed that the lines would remain closed until Friday after heavy flooding at Ulverston during Storm Bert at the weekend.
Train operator Northern said the railway was now open and services were running normally.
Network Rail said: “Our team worked around the clock to reopen the railway as soon as possible following damage by Storm Bert in Ulverston.
“We diverted the watercourse above the railway with specialist pumps to prevent further debris washing onto the tracks and removed approximately 300 tonnes of spoil from the site with excavators and specialist road to rail vehicles.
“We also used jet washing to clean the track so we could inspect it before safely opening the line.
“Protective barriers have been installed to allow the safe passage of trains while a permanent repair is quickly planned.”
