Lake District mountain rescue team volunteers were called out for the fifth time in 2025 – just eight days into the new year.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called by Cumbria police yesterday, Wednesday January 8, to an incident on Birkhouse Moor at around 2pm.

A walker had fallen in deep snow and sustained a suspected dislocation of their shoulder.

A team doctor who happened to be on Helvellyn at the time was able to get to the injured man quickly and gave initial care while the rest of the team assembled and made their way to the scene.

Once treated, the man was stretched down to Glenridding where colleagues were able to transport them onward to further care.

The incident involved 10 team members and lasted six hours.

The team said: “It’s very much winter conditions out the on the fells and trails ensure you are prepared!”
