A man was taken to hospital following a suspected gas leak in Penrith.

Police said the man was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle as precaution.

Police were called yesterday, Thursday January 16, at around 7.30pm after the report of a minor gas leak in Little Dockray.

Road closures were in place on Devonshire Street, Corn Market and King Street.

Emergency services were also liaising with gas engineers.

People are warned to make sure they have working carbon monoxide alarms in their homes after a major incident in Penrith which saw the town centre cordoned off.

Penrith firefighters evacuated a building on Thursday night following a 999 call sparked by a carbon monoxide alarm going off in a home.

The fire service was called at around 6.30pm.

Penrith Fire Station said: “A carbon monoxide alarm was sounding.

“We committed two breathing apparatus wearers with gas and carbon monoxide checking equipment to search the property and investigate what was happening and they discovered there were high readings of carbon monoxide in the building.

“We then evacuated the whole building and discovered the carbon monoxide was affecting at least nine other properties.

“One person was found in another flat thought to be suffering with minor symptoms and was taken to hospital for a precautionary check-up.

“This could have been a much more serious incident had we not received that original 999 call.

“We’d like to please ask everyone to ensure you have working carbon monoxide alarms in your home and if these ever sound evacuate your property and call 999 immediately.”

Police said the man was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle as precaution.
