Man bit victim’s hand to steal mobile phone

A man who assaulted a woman in a Carlisle street, including by biting her, has been jailed for almost three years.

Ryan Ferguson, 30, formerly of Randall Street in Carlisle, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm was sentenced yesterday at Carlisle Crown Court.

Ferguson had approached a woman in the street in the vicinity of Wigton Road in Carlisle on October 4 2024 at around 3pm.

He and an accomplice refused to allow the woman to walk away and Ferguson then dragged her to the ground.

Ferguson then began to try and take the woman’s mobile phone. When he couldn’t get it from her grasp, he bit her hand before he and the accomplice fled.

Ferguson, who also admitted a number of shop theft offences, was sentenced to a total of 35 months in prison.

Detective Constable Josh Daniel said: “This was a lengthy incident which went on for a number of minutes, culminating in Ferguson biting the victim in order to get her mobile phone from her.

“Ferguson is a prolific offender and this week’s hearing will ensure that he is spending a considerable amount of time in prison as a result of his actions.”
