A Carlisle school has announced the appointment of their new deputy head.

Claire Holmes, who has over 20 years of experience in the sector, will join Austin Friars from September.

The pastoral role maintains high safeguarding and wellbeing standards across the whole school – including its leadership, management, strategy and development.

Since joining the education sector in 2004, Mrs Holmes has built a solid foundation in pastoral care through her work with pupils from reception to sixth form – in roles ranging from house mistress to other welfare-focused senior management positions – at several respected independent schools.

A specialist in chemistry and biology, Mrs Holmes said she was also deeply passionate about outdoor learning and its role in education.

Mrs Holmes said: “I am thrilled to be joining the Austin Friars community as deputy head (pastoral).

“I am committed to helping pupils develop into well-rounded individuals, and look forward to connecting with students and their families when I meet everyone in September.”

Chris Hattam, headmaster, said: “I am delighted that Claire will be joining our team, and feel confident that her wealth of experience within schools will assist in contributing to many positive achievements and outcomes at Friars.

“On behalf of the entire school community, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Jacqueline Thornborrow for her outstanding contributions to Austin Friars over the past 20 years and wish her all the best for a happy and fulfilling retirement.”

Ewen Swinton, chair of trustees, said: “Following an extensive interview process, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Holmes and look forward to welcoming her in due course.

“A huge thank you to Mrs Thornborrow for her incredible 20 years of service – a key member of our teaching staff who will be sorely missed by all.”
