Overnight road closures have been announced for Carlisle’s Devonshire Street as work continues on its £2.25m transformation.

Work to install Gobo lighting – which projects sophisticated shapes, patterns, or images – new cellar lights and under-bench lighting will start on Sunday, January 19.

The work will take place over a week and the road will be closed to traffic between 8pm and 5am each day.

It will reopen by 5am each day, Cumberland Council said. A full diversion route will be in place, clearly marked with signs.

Devonshire Street will remain open for pedestrians.

Funded with £2.04m from the Government’s Future High Street Fund, and £250,000 from United Utilities Green Recovery Funding, the project has so far included:

  • Widened pavements on both sides of the street.
  • New seating, trees, and plants.
  • Cycle racks.
  • A single-lane carriageway.
  • Two loading bays.
