Plans have been lodged for a timber building to be used for dark skies astronomy events in the Lake District.
Forestry England has submitted a planning application to the Lake District National Park Authority to place a timber building for use as an observatory at Grizedale Forest.
The proposed building will house a telescope to complement the development of an dark skies and observatory offer at Grizedale Forest, based in The Yan, an existing educational resource centre at the site.
The proposals consist of installing a five metre by five metre timber building with an area with a retractable roof.
Forestry England said: “The use of the structure is for use at dark skies astronomy events in the evenings, providing shelter and indoor seating for attendees at events. The roof will retract to enable telescopes to see the skies above.”
According to plans the proposed building will be used alongside the existing buildings with parking provided in the existing visitors’ centre car park.
The planning application is under consideration.
