A Carlisle woman caught on CCTV dragging a mattress from her home and dumping it nearby has been left with an £1,000 bill.

Emma Irwin was taken to court by Cumberland Council for the offence and Carlisle magistrates ordered her to pay a total of £1,002 in fines and costs, which included the authority’s expenses for collecting and disposing of the mattress.

The large mattress was illegally dumped on Eastern Way.

Irwin, who lives near Eastern Way, was caught on CCTV dragging a mattress from her home and abandoning it near Eastern Way.

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable, resilient and connected places, said: “I want to thank the residents who use recycling facilities responsibly. Their efforts help keep these locations clean, tidy, and accessible for everyone, encouraging the correct use of waste disposal services.

“However, I must stress that Cumberland Council takes environmental crimes seriously. Every case of fly-tipping will be investigated, and individuals may face prosecution. We urge anyone contacted by the council regarding environmental offences to engage with us.

“Fly-tipping is more than just an eyesore; it poses serious risks to public health and the environment, attracting vermin, polluting natural habitats, and creating hazards for the community.

“We all have a role to play in keeping our area beautiful. Let’s continue recycling responsibly, and if you witness fly-tipping in your area, please report it.”
