A borehole is causing train delays and disruption in South Cumbria.
The borehole was discovered yesterday, Saturday March 2, in Grange-over-Sands by Network Rail, during an unrelated incident where train struck a commercial vehicle.
Network Rail said the borehole, used for inspection purposes, was created during a previous examination of the track.
Teams are now working to backfill the hole with concrete and thoroughly investigate it to ensure it has caused no other issues to the rail line.
A spokesman added that while teams are working as fast as possible to get the work finished, the concrete must set properly before normal services can continue.
Rail passengers are being warned to expect disruption until the end of the day and potentially into tomorrow morning as a result of the ongoing work to fix the hole.
Journeys between Barrow and Lancaster are disrupted and some bus replacement services are in place.
Barrow to Carlisle services are not affected in both directions.
Northern said customers are able to use Transpennine Express services between Preston and Lancaster.
