A bid for flood defences for Carlisle’s River Caldew have been backed by the Government.
It has approved £750,000 funding for the scheme. The flood defences were left unfinished following the devastating floods of December 2015, which affected over 2,000 properties in the city.
The funding will enable vital appraisal work of the final phase of Carlisle’s flood defences that were promised in 2016, and would cover the Denton Holme, Willow Holme and Caldewgate areas.
Julie Minns, Carlisle MP, said: “This investment is a significant step towards safeguarding our community from future flood risks.
“However, I want to reassure the people of Carlisle that I will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the timely and effective delivery of these essential flood defences.”
In the last two months, Mrs Minns said she had visited the rivers Caldew and Petteril with Carlisle Flood Action and the Environment Agency’s North West regional director; urged the Floods Minister in Parliament to address the city’s ‘forgotten lands’, and met with Defra to accelerate the completion of the defences.
The funding will cover:
