Upcoming changes in waste collections from next month means people living in Allerdale can get a bigger replacement bin.
The changes come into force on May 26 across the Cumberland Council area to harmonise the service.
People living in the former Allerdale area can now request a free bigger replacement bin.
If they currently have an 120 litre or 140 litre bin, they can request an 180 litre bin until May 8.
They can apply online at www.cumberland.gov.uk/wastechanges or by contacting Cumberland Council’s Customer Services team.
As part of the bin request process, residents will be asked to provide an email address. If this is provided, the council will contact them to confirm the delivery date.
Householders may also be eligible for an even larger or extra bin if they have a large household, young children in nappies or your household produces extra waste due to medical needs. Find out if you qualify online.
Cardboard/paper collections will increase from monthly to fortnightly from September 2025.
Updated collection date information will be available at www.cumberland.gov.uk/wastechanges from early May.
Due to the changes that are taking place over the coming months, the council is unable to provide an annual calendar and are asking residents to continue to check their website for collection information.
Cumberland residents who want additional garden waste collections are also being urged to sign up soon as new collection arrangements are now in place.
From this week, all householders in the Cumberland area with garden waste bins will continue to have one bin collected every fortnight.
There will however be a yearly charge of £40 per additional garden waste bin that residents request to be collected. This is consistent with the approach in the former Copeland area.
Residents can make a payment for extra garden waste bin collections at www.cumberland.gov.uk/wastechanges or by contacting Cumberland Council’s customer services team.
Collections are fortnightly between March and November each year.
Residents can sign up to a maximum of three additional garden bin collections per fortnight, per household.
Stickers will be supplied for the additional bins once the payment has been processed. Residents are being advised to place the sticker on the back of the bin and when putting out for collection, put the bin handle side to the road/pavement as this will help the collection crew and ensure that stickers are visible.

Following a public consultation and a comprehensive review of the current arrangements, Cumberland Council will also introduce fortnightly collections from late May 2025 in the former Allerdale area – making it the same as the Carlisle and Copeland areas.
