
A Cumbrian MP has asked the Government for reassurance over its commitment to the dualling of the A66.
The £1.6 billion project to dual the road between Penrith and Scotch Corner was thrown into doubt last autumn after it was announced that it was being included in a spending review carried out by the Department for Transport.
In Parliament yesterday, Tuesday May 20, Markus Campbell-Savours, MP for Penrith & Solway, asked Chancellor Rachel Reeves if the county and North of England would get the investment it deserved.
He said: “Cumbria is a long way from Westminster, and many of us fear that the economic case for major projects is stacked in favour of the economically active South East. Can the Chancellor reassure me that Cumbria will not be disadvantaged when key public spending decisions are taken?”
She replied: “We’ll be making decisions at the Spending Review which we will publish on June 11.
“But as a proud Northern MP myself, I am absolutely determined to ensure that the North gets its fair share of investment.”
He also met with the Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood, alongside Rishi Sunak the MP for neighbouring Richmond & Northallerton, to make the case for the scheme
