Damage at Egremont Castle prompts town council if it’s time to stop trying to preserve it

Damage caused at Egremont Castle has promoted the town council to ask where respect has gone.

In an impassioned post on social media, Egremont Town Council said: “It’s castle which has stood for thousands of years, has grounds which have housed thousands of people and yet still keep attractive.

“And here we are 2025 with holes dug to make jump ramps, trees deliberately getting dug up, what’s happened?

“We will no doubt get the comments about CCTV – which incidentally is not something you can do without due process and then funding it, we can ask where are the police? What, we seem reluctant to ask our children is why are you covered in mud?

“Where has the spade gone that was in the shed? Where is the respect gone? Yet again we ask if you see anything ring the police, get it logged as an incident, don’t assume someone else is doing it.

“The budget for the castle and grounds is not finite and replacing stones from the walls, filling holes, cleaning up takes time and money but it’s questionable about why do we want to keep throwing money at it when this happens?

“There are no easy answers but has the time come to stop trying?”
