Pupils at a Barrow school are enjoying a series of unforgettable PE lessons thanks to rugby player Ellis Archer.
Fifty-two pupils from Newbarns School’s year 6 have taken part in the dynamic sessions led by the former Barrow Raiders player, which combine high-energy drills, teamwork exercises and expert insights into professional rugby league.
Ellis has spent the first part of the summer term coaching Year 6 and will now spend the rest of this term coaching Year 5.
During the sessions, organised through Advantage Raiders, the scrum half has introduced students to a range of core rugby league skills, including passing drills, non-contact tackle techniques and agility-based games designed to improve co-ordination and teamwork.
Pupils also had the opportunity to quiz him on his journey as a professional athlete and experiences with the Barrow Raiders and his most recent team Workington Town.
Sophie Broadbent, who leads PE at Newbarns School which is part of South Cumbria Multi-Academy Trust, said it was amazing for the children to learn from someone who plays the game professionally.
She said: “Having Ellis here brought such excitement to the lesson. He was fantastic with the children – encouraging, patient and full of energy. The pupils were absolutely buzzing afterwards and are now desperate to play tag rugby!”
She thanked Ellis and Barrow Raiders for their time inspiring the next generation to stay active and develop a passion for sport.
