Organisers of this year’s Cumbria Opera Festival are gearing up for 10 days of opera, concerts and workshops across the county.
It takes place from August 21 to August 30 and tickets are on sale now.
Performances include Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Porgy and Bess Reimagined and Opera by Candlelight at venues in Grange-over-Sands, Penrith, Kendal, Carlisle, Keswick, Barrow and Appleby.
Education workshops will be held at schools across Cumbria and Joan Rodgers CBE will be holding a masterclass on August 30 at Victoria Hall in Grange-over-Sands.
Cumbria Opera Group was founded in 2016 to bring world class opera to Cumbria, and to educate young Cumbrians in the arts.
It says: “Cumbrians have historically had to travel long distances in order to witness excellent opera. Astronomical ticket prices further make opera seem elitist and inaccessible.
“We believe that opera is relevant and necessary in the contemporary arts scene, and should happen everywhere, regardless of rural isolation or existing access.
“Cumbria is a county that has historically inspired some of Britain’s finest poetry, art, and music, and should never be a place where opera is shut out, but an area where it flourishes.”
Its opera festivals in 2021 and 2023 were critically acclaimed.
