A service of thanksgiving will be held in Carlisle Cathedral later this month to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
It will be held on Sunday, June 29.
The service has been organised by Carlisle Cathedral, Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life and The Royal British Legion (Carlisle and Stanwix branch), with funding from Cumberland Council.
It will feature poems, readings, and memories from those who served in the war, read by representatives from the veteran and wider community as well as hymns chosen by local veterans.
Royal British Legion Standards for the county of Cumbria will also be received at the High Altar and the sermon will be given by The Rev Ben Phillips, RBL Chaplain.
Refreshments will be served in the Border Regimental Chapel within the cathedral following the service. Everyone is welcome to attend. To assist with catering, RSVP by visiting www.carlislecathedral.org.uk/80th_anniversary_ww2/
This service is at the end of Armed Forces Week, and at a halfway point between VE Day, which was on May 8 and VJ Day on August 15.
The Rev Canon Dr Benjamin Carter, canon warden at Carlisle Cathedral, said “It is important that we continue to hear the voices of those who sacrificed so much during the Second World War, and remember them.
“We welcome all members of our community to attend, to give thanks to those who have served, or are currently serving, our King and country.”
