Heritage is full steam ahead at South Tynedale Railway in Alston.
Join us to celebrate 200 years since the birth of the railway with two celebratory steam gala weekends on July 5and July 6 and July 12 and July 13, where a special guest loco will be the star of the show!
Steam locomotive 1215, a rare and historic loco which first saw service in the first world war, will be visiting from its home at Apedale Light Railway in Staffordshire and will be taking passengers up the line to Slaggyford and back accompanied by one of the steam locos from the railway’s own fleet.
Lots of other historic locos will be on show at this nostalgic Railway 200 event, which commemorates the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in September 1825.

Volunteers will be on hand to tell you all about their interesting history and there will be lots of photo opportunities too.
Book yourself a tour of the signal box and visit the mezzanine level of the engineering building to have a peek into the workshop itself and find out about the history of the railway.
Win yourself a badge by solving the children’s trail and treat yourself to some refreshments in the main café at Alston or the Little Buffet Car at Slaggyford.

The chuff of the pistons, the blast of the whistle, the scent of coal smoke in the air and the fabulous scenery of the South Tyne Valley make for a great day out for families and enthusiasts alike.
