Improvements to Kirkstone Pass have been shortlisted for two national awards.
Westmorland and Furness Council has been shortlisted in the Transport Project category at this year’s British Construction Industry Awards and is a finalist in the Infrastructure category of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Awards.
The council’s submission described how officers worked with contractors to complete major safety improvements on Kirkstone Pass, the most geographically challenging section of the A592, which runs through the heart of the Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tackling altitudes of nearly 1,500 feet, 25% gradients, difficult access and severe winter weather conditions, the iconic pass was fully resurfaced with renewed drainage systems, retaining walls and safety barriers fitted to improve user safety.

With nearly 250 entries across 24 categories from over 100 organisations, this year’s competition was fiercer than ever. From transformative projects to outstanding individuals, the 2025 finalists represent the very best in British construction and infrastructure.
The RICS Award entries were reviewed by a panel of independent judges, made up of experienced professionals from across the built and natural environment. They assessed each submission against a robust set of criteria and the quality of entries this year made for a highly competitive shortlist.
Andrew Jarvis, deputy leader of the council, said: “It is heartening that our capital projects are receiving national recognition against tough competition from both the public and private sector. This provides further confirmation of the quality of work we are delivering in our ambitious capital programme.
“The A592 improvements were a major undertaking, especially the challenging section of Kirkstone Pass and the teams involved are worthy nominees for these awards.”
Cllr Peter Thornton, cabinet member for highways and ICT, said: “The upgrades to the A592 and specifically the Kirkstone Pass section was a truly complex and essential scheme to improve this vital route for local communities, businesses and the thousands of visitors who come to enjoy the beauty of the Lake District.”
“Teams working on this project endured extreme geographical and weather conditions to ensure that this road is safer and more reliable for years to come. To receive national recognition for this is a real achievement for those involved and thoroughly deserved.”
Westmorland and Furness Council will now proceed to the final stage, with entries reviewed by a panel of independent judges. The BCIA winners will be announced on October 8 and RICS announcements will follow on October 16.
