Two Barrow women will race across the UK – relying only on their wits, public transport, a map and what they can carry in four days – to raise funds for a naval charity.
Janet Garner and Laura Lake are gearing up to take part in the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity’s race from September 2.
The challenge is open to everyone – both military and civilian. Participants will travel from Edinburgh to Dartmouth without map apps, cars or planes to raise funds in support of naval families facing life-changing injuries, mental health challenges, and financial hardship.
Janet and Laura said they had strong connections with the submariner community and felt privileged to represent such a meaningful cause.
Laura said: “Every submariner, sailor and marine has their own story and differing needs for support, and RNRMC is there making sure no one in the naval community is left behind.”
The Race Across the UK Challenge will push participants physically and mentally.
Laura and Janet said: “We’re looking forward to every bit of it. It’s completely out of our comfort zones – we have no idea what to expect! But we’re excited to meet the other participants, hear their stories, and be part of something special.”
They have so far raised £1,888.
