Gritters are hitting the roads in Cumbria this month – but the county is not expecting a cold snap.
Only days after the region experienced a heatwave, Cumberland Council’s gritters are out and about to prepare for winter.
Cumberland Council’s highways teams are training new staff and testing equipment.
The authority said: “These pre-season checks are essential. They allow the teams to familiarise new drivers with the vehicles and routes, while also identifying any issues that need to be resolved before temperatures drop.”
Gritters have been operating from its Lillyhall depot, near Workington, and its Dalston depot, near Carlisle, since last week and will continue this week, as part of the planning process.
Councillor Denise Rollo, portfolio holder for sustainable, resilient and connected places, said: “It might seem strange to see a gritter on the roads during one of the hottest weeks on record in Cumberland last week; but rest assured, there was a good reason!
“These test runs are crucial for ensuring our teams are fully trained and our equipment is in top condition before the winter season hits. By preparing now, we can be confident in delivering the best possible service when it’s needed most.
“If you see a gritter out and about, there’s no need for concern, it just means we’re getting winter ready.”
