Picket lines expected at Sellafield main gate

Workers at the Sellafield site have been warned to expect picket lines on the main gate this weekend.

Around 200 workers at the Sellafield site began strike action over pay on Thursday.

Sellafield Ltd has updated all workers on the site that picketing was expected today, Saturday August 9 and tomorrow, Sunday, August 10.

Members of the GMB union employed by Mitie, which provides cleaning, security, landscaping, waste management, postal services, and laundry support at the West Cumbrian nuclear complex, were due to start industrial action last Friday, August 1, for two weeks.

That was postponed as further talks took place for the sides to reach a deal.

However, the pay talks have failed.

Members rejected a 3.5 per cent pay deal offered by the company, affecting operations at Sellafield and associated sites.

The GMB said the offer would leave many workers earning little more that £13 an hour and last year and Mitie reported operating profits of £166 million, up 42 per cent from the previous year, £5.09 billion in revenue and CEO pay of £14.7 million – 575 times the average worker’s salary.

Although the industrial action is not directly related to Sellafield Ltd, it is likely to mean there may be delays and congestion for workers approaching the Sellafield site gates and people are asked to plan their journey accordingly.
