Millom continue to blaze a trail in the West Lancashire League’s Premier Division after last season’s promotion.
A 2-1 win at Burscough Richmond, who were champions three years ago and finished third last season, has been the standout result.
They had started quickly and surprised their hosts by taking the game to them.
Two well-taken goals by Jed Philip gave the south Cumbrians a 2-0 lead at the break.
The home side were stung into retaliation after the interval and started to dominate but Millom defended really well and hung onto their lead.
They looked to be heading for another clean sheet but in the 88th minute Pat Bibby scored with the help of a deflection.
It set up an anxious few minutes for the unbeaten visitors but they held on for the points to move third in the table, two points behind the joint leaders Lostock St Gerard’s and Eagley.
Here’s what David Allan had to say:
St Gerard’s went top with a 4-0 win in West Cumbria against Cleator Moor Celtic.
In a disappointing first-half by Celtic they found themselves 3-0 down inside 25 minutes.
When the visitors scored again on the stroke of half-time the game was over as a contest but Celtic had to try and win back some pride in the second-half.
They did that, playing and competing much better in and out of possession but they couldn’t find a way through the Lostock defence.
Mason Mackay (2), John-Jo Morris and Reece Thompson scored the goals for the new table leaders.
Here’s Gareth Agnew’s verdict:
It was a similar tale at the County Ground where Whitehaven went down 4-1 to reigning champions Tempest United.
Slowly out of the traps so far this was only their second win but they were good value in the end.
Whitehaven continue to have availability problems but were in better heart after a good mid-week point at Whitehaven.
Jordan Pendlebury and Sam Parkinson scored a goal in each half.
Sandwiched in between on 20 minutes was a successful strike for Whitehaven by Owen Woodburn.
The two West Cumbrian clubs only have another county side Milnthorpe Corinthians below them in the table.
The Corinthians are still without a point after a 4-0 defeat at Hurst Green.
Here’s Jon Karl Benson’s view:
The visitors never recovered from conceding three times in the first 25 minutes.
- In the North West Counties Division One North a 2-1 home defeat for Holker Old Boys was a second successive loss for them. Brandon Dawson and Josh Abbott had given Darwen a 2-0 half-time lead and although Charlie McGladdery (63) pulled one back for the home side they couldn’t salvage a point.
