Luke Hunter, the Northern League’s top goal-scorer added another two to his tally as Penrith drew at Newcastle Benfield last night.
Initially coming from behind, the Bonny Blues were ahead thanks to Hunter’s double only to be pegged back three minutes from the end.
On a very poor pitch surface, with little in the way of constructive play possible, it represented a very good point for Jim Nichols’ men.
It might have been all three points, too, as Penrith were down to 10 men in the 85th minute with a straight red for Matt Williamson.
Nichols and the Penrith players were shocked when the referee sent off Williamson for dangerous play.
The Benfield player involved had dived low to get on the end of a cross and Williamson was alleged to have caught him in the face with his boot.
It appears, though, as if it was the impact of the ball rather than a boot which produced blood and prompted the official to send off the Penrith player.
A subsequent three-match ban is something the Penrith club might consider appealing against.
Lewis Orrell had headed the home side in front two minutes into the second half but that was quickly answered.
On 49 minutes the in-form Hunter skipped round the goalkeeper and from a tight angle finished well.
Hunter’s second, and ninth of the season, on the hour looked as though it might be the winner.
But in a dramatic finish Williamson was sent off and two minutes later Owen Imeson levelled for the hosts.
