A Lake District village pub is set to reopen this week after an extensive renovation.
The King’s Arms in Hawkshead will open on Friday.
Owner Jo McGowan said the renovation was led by Cumbrian tradespeople, and had preserved original features including oak beams, stone fireplaces, and slate floors, while introducing subtle touches that create a warm, welcoming and accessible environment.
Jo said: “Our renovation was a labour of love, made possible by the dedication of local builders, craftsmen, and designers.

“We wanted to create a place that truly belongs to the community, a welcoming space where people can come together, relax, and celebrate what makes Hawkshead and the Lake District so special.”
Planning permission for the revamp was granted in January 2024 and work started in March 2024.
The pub will also feature a new menu, with locally sourced food. The kitchen is led by head chef Ross Bowman.

The King’s Arms also has eight en suite bedrooms.
The 17th century inn was run by three generations of the same family for 40 years until its lease and freehold was put on the market in 2021.
