Interest in a new sea swimming group in Whitehaven has snowballed just weeks after it was set up.
Whitehaven Seagals and Buoys was formed by Keely Jackson who began swimming offshore when she lived on the south coast.
“Three years ago when I was living in Hastings I regularly dipped and when I moved to Cumbria really missed the buzz I used to get from going in the sea,” Keely, who worked for the NHS for 20 years, said.
But her interest in swimming is more than just a way of keeping fit. 10 years ago she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and says access to the sea helps her manager her condition.
“There are days when I have less energy than others but find that even a short time in the sea really gives me a boost,” Keely said.

“I’ve swum at Ravenglass and in Wastwater but just wanted to find some like-minded people.
“A post on Facebook a few weeks ago started it off. In wasn’t sure if anyone would come but from me and on other, it was five, then 15!”
On Friday, 17 people joined her in the outer harbour at Whitehaven to dip in the Irish Sea where the sandy beach is, she says, is ideal for novices and others who may have medical conditions.
A fellow ‘seagal’ who has undergone recent knee surgery has been able to gently exercise.

Keely’s Facebook group has grown to over 180 and shows no sign of stopping.
She added: “I’m so glad it started up and it’s great to meet so many people from all walks of life.”
