The Hound Trailing Association is mourning the death of a prominent and long serving member.
Jayne Petersen, 57, has died after a short illness.
She had been involved in the sport of hound racing all her life, having come from a long family line with the same interest.
One of four children to Michael and Elizabeth Oldcorn they lived in Barrow before moving to Askam.
She began by training hounds with her father, known as Pip, and sister Kay and they had plenty of success with hounds such as Del Piero, Iestyn, Cancellara and in particular Cavendish, who was the apple of her eye.
One special memory recalled by Kay was landing a rather unique treble at Bower House when Cancellara and Cavendish dead-heated and Pip’s Lad won another trail.
Pip’s Lad was runner-up in the 2011 puppy maiden points competition while Cancellara was runner-up in then 2013 open restricted points competition.
Over the years they had winners at the big meetings – Ambleside Sports, HTA Produce, Hound Trailing Festival and the Whitehaven Classic.
Along with her father, Kay, brother Michael and nephew Christopher, they all served on the Ulverston Area committee.
She played a key role for many years in the running of the sport and was the first female chair of the Ulverston Area.
She served as vice chairman when her father was chairman, and later when she chaired the area, brother Michael was vice chairman.
She served on the executive committee and was treasurer of the international committee as well as running several competitions and hound racing news on Facebook.
In more recent years Jayne moved north to live in west Cumbria with partner Ian Fleet who also has a long family history of hound trailing and together they set up their kennel in Broughton Moor running several hounds together the most recent being High Crag, Chapel Stile and Chapel Lad.
They would often be out on the roads scouting, and helping out where they could.
Both had a spell on the local area committee all the while with Jayne continuing her work to promote hound trailing through different channels.
