People opposing plans to demolish a parade of shops in Barrow and replace them with a Tesco Express are invited to attend a community meeting.
West Midlands-based LCP Property Investments wants to knock down six units demolished on Lakes Parade in Hawcoat and replace them with a Tesco Express.
Eviction notices have been served on the owners of the shops, with employees told they will be made redundant.
Organised by Michelle Scrogham, MP for Barrow and Furness, the meeting will take place at Dane Ghyll Community Primary School on Skelwith Drive on Thursday, November 27, from 6pm to 7.30pm.
Mrs Scrogham said: “The existing shops are highly valued by Hawcoat residents, providing essential services such as hairdressing, a launderette and a bakery.
“Their loss would be a real blow to the area and to small business owners who have invested so much in serving their community.
“The entire character of this part of Hawcoat would be changed for good if this plan goes ahead.
“The proposals have already sparked strong opposition from residents, with a petition signed by more than 1,300 people.
The MP has also asked for a meeting with Tesco representatives to discuss the application and the future of Lakes Parade.
The planning application is open for consultation until December 5.
Mrs Scrogham added: “I would like to thank everyone at Dane Ghyll for allowing us to hold the meeting in the school and I would encourage those concerned about these proposals to attend.”
