L’Enclume

A Cumbrian restaurant has been named the best in the UK and among the second best in the world.

Simon Rogan’s three Michelin star L’Enclume in Cartmel was handed the accolades by La Liste, which rates the top 1,000 restaurants globally.

It is the second time L’Enclume has been rated as top in the UK by the prestigious travel guide.

Nine restaurants shared first place in the rankings, which are determined by an objective analysis of online reviews, guidebook ratings and media publications.

L’Enclume scored 99.00, beating The Ritz in London, which was fourth.

Mr Rogan said: “Once more I’m honoured that L’Enclume has been recognised as the top British restaurant in La Liste for the third consecutive year.

“Being listed alongside restaurants from across the globe run by chefs we admire is an immense privilege. However, none of these achievements would be possible without the dedicated team I work with, and this recognition is a reflection of their skill and hard work.

“For the Lake District to have seven restaurants featured in La Liste 2026 shows how far the restaurant scene has developed in the county, putting it firmly on the global culinary stage and at the forefront of the UK’s ever-evolving and developing dining scene.”

Allium at Askham Hall, near Penrith (86.5), Forest Side at Grasmere (84), The Old Stamp House (82) and Lake Road Kitchen (80) in Ambleside, Cedar Tree by Hrishikesh Desai at Farlam Hall, near Brampton (81) and Source at the Gilpin Hotel in Windermere (77.5) also made the list.

Ryan Blackburn, chef-owner of The Old Stamp House, said: “It’s a real honour to be among the 83 UK restaurants in La Liste 2026.

“Being assessed alongside restaurants from around the world, and those closer to home that we respect and admire, is a great way to develop not only yourself but the restaurant as a whole.

“Being included for the third consecutive year is incredibly humbling and a real pat on the back for everything the team strives to do for our guests. I’d like to say a huge thank you to every member of the team for their continued hard work and dedication.”

Ollie Bridgwater, exectutive chef at Source at Gilpin Hotel, said: “Source reaching La Liste for the first time is a hugely exciting moment for us and a real testament to the dedicated team behind every dish.

“Coupled with retaining our Michelin Star and recently being awarded four AA Rosettes, it’s a milestone that celebrates both our achievements and the hard work that has gone into maintaining these standards.

“The Lake District is an incredible source of inspiration and being part of La Liste highlights not only the talent within our team but also the region’s standing as a world-class dining destination.

“It encourages us to keep exploring, innovating and showcasing everything this beautiful area has to offer through our cuisine.”
