A stationary police vehicle – which was helping a broken down car on a South Cumbrian road – was involved in a collision on a South Cumbrian road.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened on the southbound carriageway of the A590 yesterday, December 15, at around 4.05pm.

It involved the stationary police vehicle and a white Renault Master van.

The driver of the van, a man in his 40s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving a vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit. He was released under investigation.

There were no injuries as a result of the collision.

The road was closed temporarily while a collision investigation was carried out.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any dashcam of the incident is asked to contact Sergeant Martin Bainbridge at www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it, quoting incident number 160 of 15 December 2025 or call 101.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
